C.E.S. @ VEGAS

So I got into Las Vegas on the 2nd and have begun working over at the Las Vegas Convention Center for our Jeopardy tapings at the Consumer Electronics Show. It's been pretty busy thus far, with a lot of preparation work. It is really cool to see the convention floor come to life. Sony seems to have really dominated a lot of the available space even though there are a number of other buildings that I'm sure have other BIG vendors in them as well. I was reading that with the current economy that the C.E.S. show will be smaller than in the past. There are less businesses taking up space and they expect less attendees as well. I guess in the past a lot of electronic companies showcased "bigger and better items", where as this year they will be focusing on more "green items" that use less energy consumption.

However, for us it's still a huge under taking. Jeopardy will be unveiling its 25th anniversary set which looks really "hi-tech" cool. We'll be filming three different days one of which will be our celebrity show. The filming times are pretty late as we do them after the convention actually closes to the public. So I'll probably be averaging like 15-17 hr days on those three with on average like 10-12 hrs daily for the rest of the trip.

The convention floor has no heat until the show starts on the 8th so it is extremely cold. Today I am wearing a sweatshirt, winter coat (thanks dad glad I grabbed the one you offered), and gloves to give you an idea of just how cold it is. I think in the building it's like 56 degrees so when there is downtime you really just try not to freeze.

They put us up at the Hilton Vacation Resort, which is pretty nice. It doesn't have a casino in it, which I like. Also it has a kitchenette so I went out and got groceries so I wouldn't spend too much extra cash. I'll be here till the 14th so there will be a lot of overtime, which is always a good ting. Rachel drove down yesterday just for the night to surprise me, which was nice.

Anyway, if they let us take pictures I will attempt to do so, but I think there may be a number of legal issues as the show is unveiling a lot of new items that different vendors will be releasing in the new year so who knows. Hope all is well with everyone it was nice to see all who made it to Dad's for Christmas.

Do you get to meet the celebrities that will be on the show?

Sounds like you will be busy. It was good seeing you in Des Moines and catching up.

Sounds very cold, my apt has been like that lately, not sure why. Forgot what a winter was like, even in Not-so-Sunny California.

Sounds like you'll be very busy. Try to get some decent sleep when you can, also try and not miss the buss as I could see you sleeping in after those long hours.

I kinda don't get why Jeopardy is at the CES. What does Jeopardy have to do with consumer electronics? Maybe the letters are now some fancy-dancy digital magic .. or, wait .. Vanna .. she's a robot isn't she?

anyway, USA Today published an article on the show In Monday's edition. Sounds like a huge huge deal.

Hmm, Brian. Is it a SONY tie-in?

Have a good time, Adam. Sounds like an interesting gig.

Adam McKinney:

Yeah Jeff/Brian it's def. a Sony tie in. Basically Sony will provide all of our tech. equipment that we’ll be using. Basically a number of new LED lights along with HD flat screens. Not sure if their the quarter inch ones but probably. Those are really one of the big things to be unveiled this year at CES. The set looks amazing, I should take some pictures..... I'm so bad about that but I'm sure I'll be able to get some from some other people. It uses a lot of plexy glass which we shoot lights up through along with a number of other high tech Florissant tubing.
I found out who our celebrity contestants will be. They are: Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds- Showtime), Aisha Tyler (24 but I know she has been on a bunch of small things). Then I think Penn from Penn and Teller is our back up. I will probably have very little interaction with them.
Something that sounded really neat which I haven't had a chance to see is Sony's new 3-d television. I guess you wear glasses and it really does work pretty well. Well see if I will have any time to actually see anything, I’ve been working such long hours I don’t really see myself coming here on my time off to browse.

Sounds really interesting...much better then Kretek...tobacco, cigars and Penthouse women! I always felt like my lungs needed a good cleaning as the entire convention floors were solid smoke Hello to Rachel

Adam McKinney:

Here is a link that our head producer just sent out to everyone.
It's a story about Jeopardy at C.E.S. Today will be our final taping day. Things wen well with yesterdays celebrity show as well as the bg day prior. So hopefully today goes off with out a hitch. Then for the rest of the trip I'll be just helping taking down everything. Believe it or not this particular "remote" seemed to be easier on me rather than the Madison College J! show. At that event everthing was really spread out wich allowed for more walking and a bit more "spread out work".

Wow. Looks impressive.

A report from C.E.S. was playing in the ER last night while I was doing a procedure on a college-aged patient. I asked her to look over my shoulder for you.

She thought your parka story was superb.
