golf is a skill game
So .. i had my doubts about golf being a real sport for a long time. I mean come on .. you're just hitting a ball into a hole. how hard can that be? I mean you get 5 chances on some holes to get par - 5 chances? That seems like alot to me. Anyway .. Shannon and I played a round (9 holes) of golf this weekend and I was humbled - golf is indeed a game of skill. Compare the profiles of Shannon/I on the initial tee off - Shannon has golfed before and has skill, I, well - I am a true hazard to myself and those anywhere near me. Notice in the photo how my feet remain planted in the same exact spot after my swing and my arms are doing - well, i have no idea what my arms are doing. Needless to say - i now have a new found respect for the game. My score? I lost track after getting to 11 on the initial par 3 (double quintuple-bogey?)

I thought the higher score the better. . . guess golf is the exception. Got the new Sports Illustrated Football Preview issue, so am getting pumped up over the team predictions. Iowa State should be last in their conf., Iowa mid-range.
What's even more impressive is that Shannon is doing it in flip flops.
I enjoy playing golf but it is very challenging. A couple years ago a friend of mine (who is a pretty good golfer - shoots around mid to upper 80's consistently) and I went to Florida for a little escape from the Wisconsin winter to golf. One day we spent four hours with a golf pro for lessons and improvement on our swings in all phases of the game. After having a real lesson, you find out very quickly how many variables their are in a golf swing (some extremely subtle and some well... obviously wrong). The quote of the day was my friend saying "wow, that was a great swing, if your clubhead would have been a millimeter or two closer....it would have been a great shot."
If you want to see something that will blow your mind, go watch a pro golf tourney in person and then think about your game. The distance and control that you can witness by watching a golf pro might light your hair on fire. But........even the best get bitten by the challenge of the game.
Keep hacking away.
I think part of the magic of athletics is that people can do such things at all, AND they make them look easy. One of these pictures looks easy. One of these pictures does not look easy (unless, perhaps, someone is PITCHING you golf balls). But, every journey starts with a first uneasy step, right? Enjoy.
Ok I'm lovin the red circles thats hilarious. Next time I come up we should go golfing at a public course. I've played twice now in the last two weeks. It was my first time and I loved it. I found that I was pretty good at driving but horrid at putting.
Guess they say that the game is really won in putting.
I didn't realize that the pros walk through out the entire game. That must really affect their swinging power later on. Who ever says that golf isn't exhausting has never played.
Another thing .. 18 holes is hard work!! We went out again today and decided to play 18 instead of 9 .. exhausting! (we even rented a cart).
I think if i decide to play semi regularly Im going to invest in a few lessons. Adam - next time you're up we'll head for the course. maybe i can beat you! (shannon is too good).
indeed it is. i've hit at the driving range a couple different times, with a couple different clubs, and i still can't not swing like a baseball bat (while aiming at the back net).
putting is much more my game. especially if there's a windmill blocking the whole.
