I had an awesome sandwich today .. the "Holy Hummus": hummus, served on wheat bread with lettuce, tomato, sprouts, roasted red peppers and cucumber.
Good Eats! Hummus is the new Ham! .. it's made of ground chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. .. great source of iron, vitamin C, protein, and fiber. Fiber rocks!
btw .. this is an example of a great blog entry (good job me) that isn't really that interesting, has no pictures, yet it connects with all of you in a very real way! Blogging is easy! It can even be about what you had for lunch!

being that grace is a vegetarian, we buy a lot of hummus - and i can't get enough of it. we use it as a condiment on just about everything. chickpeas are also a great addition to almost every dish.
kris makes a rockin hummus from scratch - maybe he'll post his recipe. ;)
"Hummus is the new ham" - I like it.
Brian is right on wiht the ingredients although I have thrown in some other things to change it up a bit.
Classic recipe:
1 (15.5 oz.) can chickpeas, rinsed/drained
1/4 c. tahini (sesame seed paste)
most big groceries do carry but if you
don't have any peanut butter can substitute
(sometimes well, especially with honey roasted peanut butter)
1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 c. water
2 cloves garlic (I usually use more - what can
I say, I love garlic)
3/4 tsp. salt
Pinch cayenne pepper or a splash or two of tabasco sauce
3 tbs. fresh lemon juice (usually 1 good size lemon (sometimes I do a combo of lemon and lime)
Throw it all in a food processor and run until it is all blended (I like mine kind of thick)
Other ingredients I play with:
Cut the chick peas in half and use black beans for the other half(Mmmmm....black beans.
Throw in some roasted red peppers or sun-dried tomatoes in the food processor.
I have chipotle chili powder and sometimes will use that for that touch of spice (but this spice gives a smokiness hint to the hummus. I won't take this as an original idea, but one the restaurants that Heather and I frequented in Milwaukee sprinkled paprika over the top when they served it. If you have smoked paprika (you can get that smokiness again). Serving the hummus on warm pitas is quite tasty. Ok, I'll stop rambling on about hummus.
I have another odd food for people to venture onto, especially for a vegetarian item. It is called seitan. It is wheat gluten and gives some nice substance to some meals without using meat. I have a simple good black bean taco recipe that uses this.
Ya I was surprised by how much I enjoyed hummus. A new place I just tried that moved in near my place is a Greek restaurant called Daphne's. I had never had the Greek sandwich hero. I had one and it was amazing. I never knew lamb tasted so good. Not sure if it's the regular meat flavor or the seasoning but it had an amazing amount of flavor. It came with this side sauce that was like a cucumber ranch sauce. The restaurant itself reminded me of a Quizno type establishment. Good eats and a great blog. Brian -keep it up-
