trail fun

Check out the official course map of an 11 mile trail race I ran last weekend in Massachusetts.

Work is nuts - I'm going to have to stay in Boston the entire month of August without a trip home (ungood). So - I'm trying to keep some sanity by running often and racing when I can. When I stumbled upon this race map I knew it was for me. Any map done in magic marker is going to rock .. was surprisingly scenic (oxford, ma .. hour+ west of boston). There were two river crossing - both hip deep.

I fell twice - trail was rocky / full of tree roots and after 5-6 miles I was getting tired and not lifting my feet enough to clear the path. Fortunately no damage beyond a few scraps. good fun

Was in Lisa/Heather land on Tuesday - just for 24 hours (Richmond). I mentioned to our potential client that i had family in bristol and if things worked out (we're bidding for work there) it would be 'almost' like home since I'd be close to my sisters. They said bristol is not close to Richmond - that anyone who attempted that drive was in for a long long adventure. What the heck? There are roads in between richmond/bristol right? They also inquired if my sisters had all their teeth, a dozen kids, and 6 cars on blocks .. i said . "you know them"? we all laughed .. ah .. making fun of family with total strangers .. priceless.

Running that trail must have taken you back to memories of Red Haw....deep river crossing sounds challenging but so was finishing in the sand!

Sorry you will be in Boston so long. Craig siad thre are some neat things to do. How about taking a DUCK?

So joking about family. Old story...Jeff was getting some important award at Iowa. We ALL went to a small meeting room with the President of U of Iowa and other assorted dignateris. Sounding ok...so far! All the younger children were assigned an older one...everyone had a bag of surprizes to keep them behaving. I was looking evil eyed at those misbehavers.

At that point one of those degnateries came up to me and said "Oh, are you Jeffrey's mother?" I replyed "Yes ". He responded " You are diffrent than I expected...I heard you live on a small farm and have 8 children and...can't remember what he said next...no running water, mules in the yard, barefoot ...so this is not the first joke about family members.

Hope you are able to connct with Va delegation. It is really nice there and all see happy...with four adults and 2 children:)

Take care

That 11 mile run looks hecktick... i think you got fatty matt beat

Cool map - this looks like real cross country (rather than more standard running across a gold course). Sounds like a great run.

You and Matt do more long races than I ever did, but my favorite was a roughly 9 miler that took one by the real [still intact, fairly isolated] "American Gothic" home about mid-course. That, and a thorny locust spike through the foot with no one else around to hear the yelping (DOH!). Enjoy.

The race sounds fun. I haven't done it but it sounds like the race at Living History Farms every year on trails. It has become pretty popular because of its ruggedness. Although, I don't believe there are hip high river crossings.

It would be great if you can make it to Bristol. I haven't made the drive to Richmond yet but I would say if you took interstate the whole way it would be somewhere between 4 and 5 hours. Bristol is southwest of Richmond but because of the mountains, the interstate heads northwest before you will head southeast....thus, adding time. You could travel as the crow flies and take the two lane highways across the state....that would take even longer but would make for some scenic driving, and you might meet some more relatives with missing teeth.
