president elect ..
In 2 days Barack Obama will be President Elect ... and that is pretty freakin cool. It almost restores my faith in Americans. almost.
In CA we also have an important, potential watershed proposition to vote on. "Prop 8" - chances are even outside of CA you've heard of it since it's bound to either move the country forward in terms of civil liberties or .. well, or not. If Prop 8 passes it would formally change the CA constitution so that marriage is only valid between a man and a woman. It boggles my mind how anyone could justify voting for this. equality for all .. just not those who aren't exactly like me .. that makes sense.

Maybe politics/family should be off limits for the sake of domestic tranquility, but here's my take.
I fear my state is still too close to call for Obama vs McCain, but we did what we could here (canvassing, getting staff off work early to vote, etc.). Fortunately, the other swing states swung the way they did.
I have this intense desire to now go out to buy a top-of-the-line American flag for our house - to supplement the little US flag we take camping. I'm so happy to have the prospect of feeling proud of my country's president. I hope he brings the country a sense of shared mission, rather than a stew of population splintering divisiveness. "Us vs. them" may win some elections, but does it really make society better?
People were still getting killed for civil rights movements when I was a kid. Maybe last night argues it's still OK to dream of better times within a lifetime. I hope so.
