late night ramblings from Brooklyn

filthy apartment

So, some of you have asked about what our apartment is like... for starters, its surprising big - with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a backyard - and brand new construction. One might think (as we did), "Brand new construction. The building must be solid." Wrong. In fact, it's LESS 'solid' due to landlords buying cheap property and cutting corners - assuming they will then sell in a few years for the big profit.

Since our move in, we have monthly 'special features' (to steal dad's great term) that have been more than challenging... although usually end with cheaper rent that month, so at least something beneficial comes from it.

This month (last week) we had a sewage pipe break and then back-up into the bottom floor (it's two stories) of our apartment. Below are some pics to check out our morning 'surprise'. FYI, we have now cleaned the place top to bottom and are back in working condition. Later this weekend, I'll post some 'current' pics for everyone.

< We awoke to Charlie howling and water all around the bed, leading down the hall.

< We waded down the hall and found water rushing out of this drain as if someone had turned on a hose deep inside the pipe. This was the root of problem.

< Around the corner from the wash room (where the drain was located) we see Grace's (mother's) rug under a good inch of water while more was coming in from under our back door.

< Finally, I ran upstairs to find the slum-landlord's number and report the problem. I glance outside and am mesmerized by the image of our (small) backyard - literally - filled 6-7 inches above ground. Just before I questioned where all this standing water would drain too, I actually had a moment of awe.

Heck, just leave the water in the back yard and add some japanese koi fish . I see them everywhere now.

Wow. Next month the landlord can advertise a rooftop pool. Best of luck drying things out. I vote for free rent this month. The pictures would be a helpful advertisement otherwise. Maybe NBC can feature them. Holly and I had a rusted out hot water heater in our first place, and I've decided there isn't much more demoralizing than a flood. Hang in there.

Your place looks really big and nice i like the rug and why do you have xmas trees up stairs

Looks like you're batting 1000 w/ both water and fire. Sweet beaver.

I feel your pain, a little anyways. Shannon and I came home from a vegas weekend to water flowing out of our garage door. I was hoping that it meant our homeowners decided to install a water park / slide in my garage. But, it was instead our waterheater exploding. Not as fun as your situation, but still fun times. AT least in your case you get cheaper rent... in my case I got a bill for $1400. Guess I should have gambled more in vegas.

Hey just wanted to say that i will get an aim account in the next few days and let you know what it is ...

chat stew sooo meaty
