Life in America 100 Years Ago

IN 1909 . . . Avg. life expectancy was 47. Only 14% of homes had a bathtub. Only 8% had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The max. speed limit in cities was 10 mph. Average wage was 22cents per hr., avg. worker made $200-$400 per yr. More than 95% of births took place at home. The population of Los Vegas was 30. Crossword puzzles had not yet been invented. 2 out of 10 adults could not read or write and only 6% had graduated from high school . Marijuana, heroin and morphine were all available over the counter at the local drugstore. 95% of today's taxes did not exist in 1909. Just a reminder of how far we've come.

All this data seems made up. But I don't know my history, so I guess I will take it in.

Dad was around in 1909 so you can trust his word

47 year average human life expectancy? Yikes.

A lot of other species have probably taken a hit as we cover the planet, though.

Was Mac alive in 1909?

I think you have some very serious points and then there is this one: "Crossword puzzles had not yet been invented."
