Students studied different artists, wrote a report about that person, made a color chart using colored pencils, gridded of a portrait and tried to match values from the original painting to their square
Students designed and created their own "plush-o rama- creatures". They made the paper pattern and hand sewed everything. It is funny, most creatures looked like the students.

Students looked at Arcembaldo's paintings and then created their own self-portraits using fruits and vegetables. They worked on value, shade and space. At the end we had a Tasting Party. They made me a list of fruits and vegetables that wanted to try and we ate, healthy :)
We looked online at Chinese and Japanese paper Lanterns. We also watched the Lantern festival last year in Japan on the internet. The students learned about organic and geometric shapes as the designed their own lanterns.
We looked at sign language and created a 3-5 letter word that expressed something about themselves. They worked on drawing skills and value using pencil.

You may be running the best art program ever! All of these projects look really creative not to mention fun. I would like to make my own plush-o-rama doll. That one that kid made looked pretty cool (looked kind of like a monsters inc. character).
Maybe you could pass on the Japanese Lantern project. I could see it being something that Rachel could use for her future classrooms. I don't believe they have an art class or time period, so Rachel tries to be creative when thinking up projects in which they can learn course material while being creative. Even though the lantern project would prob. be too difficult for her 1st graders.
I suppose since you took over the art program that it's a must take for the students. Great pictures!
Heather - I am way impressed. It must be a great feeling to be able to share your passion with the students. I personally always hated art class .. but, i can't imagine anyone not enjoying your projects.
One of Shannon's favorite artists is Frida Kahlo, I'm sure you know she really had a difficult and interesting life. Like Adam, I'm more of a Plush-o-rama kinda guy.
Your recent blogging has been worth the wait .. keep them coming!
wow, fantastic stuff! you know i'm 99% sure i've seen "plush-o rama- creatures" sold in stores for big bucks - maybe you should be marketing some of these projects.
