Can you identify the species of this caterpillar? We found it on a hike and we do not recognize it.

No caterpillar species is not my area of expertise
Awesome photo - it's tough to get an 'up close' photo that sharp.
I have a guess: American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

I think my guess is wrong though - and, suggest looking through the following websites to validate (my eyes got tired of looking at all the pics)
