New School Year

The new school year is starting off well. Here are pics from Day 1. Claire and Riley both have wonderful teachers and nice classmates. They are already learning some exciting things. After the first week Riley suggested a 20-on/2-off schedule might work better than the current 5-on/2-off system. Consider this one McKinneyTree thank-you to great teachers everywhere.

Conway school is fortunate to have the next generation of McKinneys in their midst. What's that official looking seal to the right of the front door outside? Looks rather "Presidential". Don't tell me that man from Missouri, Harry S. Truman went there. Learning never ends. . . enjoy it all.

what exactly is a 20 on 2 off scedule

Steven: 20 days at school, 2 days off

Riley, I think the 2 days off is just as necessary as the 5 days on - to help recharge the noggin. However, I have heard lots of positive studies about cutting out summer breaking and going full year with 2 two-week breaks at different times of the year.

You guys look like a great team, having a brother/sister to look after you in school makes all the difference.

serious question - why are there dinner plates in the front door window? Is that just in case you come home starving and need to grab a plate as fast as possible? not a bad idea but a bit weird.

B: Those are not plates, but wire rings died with Indigo Ink after drawing on them with a wax pencil at the family art museum program. They are cloth, but we could use them for plates in a pinch.

I am not sure about the 20 days 2 off thing doesn't that mean your at school more often... i know how much you like school but i think it would get overwellig.. seems 5 day 2 off or do you mean 2 weeks off on the 20 not two days

S & C: Yes, 20 days at school followed by 2 days off, (rather than 5 days at school followed by 2 days off) is probably excessive. I think it reflects how much Riley likes what goes on at school. Of course, another possibility is that he just really dislikes weekends, but I don't see evidence for that - which is reassuring.

[Warning - philosophical musings ahead...]Schedules are funny, though. I've been working more ER shifts, accompanied by times off that I've not experienced in years. Working at full blast on 3AM on a given Sunday has some strange Vampire-like elements, but a Tuesday day off with Holly can be a beautiful thing. I've found that access to off-peak activities like the Tuesday Art Museum lecture can be wonderful.

Dad: Good pick-up on the school plaque. I believe it's a recent federal award (Blue ribbon school?) the school recieved. Truman was closer to KC than StL. I think we'll explore his story in the next 12-36 months, with a train ride visit to Independence MO.
