Craig suggested we use this forum to decide plans for Christmas at the Bare's 2009

Margaret and Jack (Grace's parents) are coming Dec 18 and are staying in a Hotel. They plan to see some of LA and surrounding places while here. We plan to give then some ideas of things to see/do in LA and have them over for dinner during their visit here.

Having our family expand is really neat and we are very glad that when McKinney's extend their relationships we can add them to our holiday plans.

Craig and Grace plane to arrive the 23rd and will stay here with us as will Matt. Matt has already been preparing for the holidays by setting up the tree and other decorations. So let me say we are appropriately festive!

Rachel's family will also be joining us as they 2 yrs ago. Rachel's mom (Eunice) arrives Dec 24th and Josh(Rachel's brother lives in LA) will pick her up at the airport. She will be staying with Adam and Rachel. Rachel's father and wife (Dan and Jeannie) will also join us for Christmas Day 25th.

I am open for anyone arriving here at our home whenever they want Dec 25th. The more the merrier! Dinner can be around 5 or 6 ish. OR if later than that is better....speak up!~

I am also thinking each family may want personal time...that might be Dec 25th a.m. or as you each decide the time best suited to you. Gerry and I will use that time for setting up tables and preparing Christmas dinner. Ho Ho Ho ....Glad we both love to cook and love family!

Dec 24th sounds like all McKinney's will be in town :Steven, Adam, Rachel, Craig, Grace, Matt and maybe Brian and Shannon. I have homemade Pizza planned for dinner...Steven reports out it is good......and we will have a personal gift exchange together Mom to her kids Dec 24 Christmas Eve. Gerry and I have a gift for each of you.

We are glad we can do that exchange Dec 24th so Dec 25 th we can arrange for the 16 of us to have dinner etc. I believe a gift exchange is set up and agreeded upon for Dec 25 for all 16 for a $50.00 gift for the GAME! Can each of you tell your family members or would you like me to send out some info?

Now back to Dec 24th Please indicate your preference for another gift game (yes or no) and for what amount ....... $ 25.00 or as agreeded upon.

Craig...you be the tabulator........and let each of us know Dec 24th gift amount
Dec25 th gift amount......????????

Looking forward to a happy holiday with those able to come to LA and to those who can not make it here a very Merry Christmas!

Trying to get caught up:) But guess you all will think these are NOT ONE LINERS! Oh well it is feast or s

Alaska Bridge Cruise - We did the Glaciers by Float plane, Helicopter and landed, Canoe ( up close and personal). Alaska was not high on my list of places to go but this experience proved me wrong!

Visit to Craig and Grace's. Rode subways, did Met Art, Natural History, Gughime, Blue Men Performance, small neat eaters, great market with things I have never seen, 9-11 sight, neat Art Deco buildings, and many ethnic neighborhoods. Top of the Rock and the best just valued time spent with Craig and Grace

While in NY I broke my camera $250 to fix..not gona happen so I am on withdrawals

Our Church has a yearly auction. We donated a dinner experience... $100 a plate 7 courses called Evening in Paris. We will prepare it all and serve in Mickey and Miney aprons 16 people have paid to come in April $ goes to inner city LA missions and homeless shelters

Currently at Lisa's Kids are sweet Painting a Disney mural on the back wall of their large playroom. Anna keeps saying "Awsome"

Gerry broke a tooth today..remains need to be surgically removed...needs replacement but will need to heal...sinus area was now exposed so stitches etc. Hoping a bridge will be able to work

Best Buy has finally agreed to give up credit for our demon possessed computer Maybe once we get replacement I will be able to find some interest in computer communication

Nov Bridge trip to Barcelona canceled. Cruise ships are cutting cruises. They are sailing full just canceling many. The company who places us had to cancel with 22 people (lectures etc one day.)

I do have a cruise...I will be doing face painting so for once I will be getting us an opportunity rather than Gerry. Dec 19-26 2010 Mexico to Cabo. Putting ideas together so people can choose

Happy Turkey day to all

July 1....was our 9th wedding anniversary and we recieved from the dinning staff champaign and a beautiful cake. This is the first time we have had to share a table but we were very lucky! The couple is from Australia, both had their first marriage partners die etc. Both are rather interested and candid about issues ie abortion, pro life pro choice politics so Gerry has been in hog heaven. Usually he doesn't express his views as he things it is better not to get into heated discussions but this couple has thought it all a really sharing of different cultures etc.

July 2 Last Port Geraldton back in Australia and out excursion was very nice....we saw Kangaroos in the wild and I think I was able to get good photos also the large orstrich like birds clifts impressive....carved by the river leading to the sea...sort of a small grand canyon...beautiful colors.

All in all it has been a good trip. I am hoping for a smooth exit...Gerry must exit some place with crew and I leave from another destination. I am marking all bags with my color passenger tags....Will be glad once I find Gerry and bags and clear customs!

I have the packing job and all bags must be outside the room door before dinner....but I did most of it yesterday as it was a sea day....it was also extremely rough gales and water and as the ship cut trough the high waves it sounded like a booming construction site.

Looking forward to getting home and excited for Adam and Rachel's wedding and reconnecting with everyone. Love to all Mom

      1st Port
Penang just of the North West coast of Malaysia and measuring 15 miles long by nine miles wide and encircled by a 48 mile long coast road. It is connected to Malaysia by an eight mile long bridge which is the 3rd larges in the world. 13 different languages are spoken here. Since we have seen reclining Buddas and temples we did a tour of the local area by trishaw. It was interesting but the man who mananged the trishaw ( a bike with a people carrier in front was a very old Chinesse, looked in his 80's , spoke no english) and I felt uncomfortable with his age having to bike up hills etc and on brick pavement with the combined weight of Gerry and I.
2nd Port
Phuket Thailand which features tall jungled hills, a beautiful coastline, coconut plantations, rice farms, white sand beaches. The island is 1`2 miles wide and 30 miles long and is famous for shell fish. There are 29 Buddist Temples here but we opted for nature. We traveled to Phang-Nga Bay. Here were beautiful dramaticly shaped rock structures and islands. One of the James Bond movies was filmed here. Panyi Island is home to a Muslim fishing building. These people live in very small homes mostly hooked together and built on stilts placing them very close to high tides. This area is naturally protected from Sunami (SP?) as the land itself sets a natural dyke area. The locals do shell work m, some sewing crafts and some wood carvings. Most of the time was spent on the water which was really peaceful.
3rd Port
LangKawi Malaysia...again we opted for nature by taking a small boat and exploring an ecosystem of winding rivers, mangrove forests, isolated islands, bat cave and limestone rock formations. We were able to see various types of Eagles that were beautiful and are attracted to the engins of the boats so fly around and dive into the river for fish.
4th Port
Port Kelang which took us into Kuala Lumpur. I especially thought of you Jeff. How much it must have changed since you were an exchange student there. Many Black Muslim vieled women but children in regular dress. English cricket courts are still used inside of the busy very modern city. The Twin Towers here are beautiful but house offices and shopping Center..one of the largest in the world and I might add extremely expensive....Prada, L.B. Channel etc. The town began with 87 miner- prospectors and 70 died of either fever or tigers. The arictecture is amazing....representing so many cultures. We have been here before so we opted for a walking tour and saw Chinatown, and Hindu Temple, Chinesse Temple, the Central Market, Moorish style train station, and the Blue Mosque. We also went to the Orchard gardens.
5th Port
Singapore We had been here before...that time I had broken my camera and we shopped to replace that so this time was much nicer. We went to a bird park and saw their bird show featuring huge birds. We also visited a Botanical Garden and walked up a huge hill to get a view of the city. It is a city of lights and noice and technology..

Now 5 days at sea....more bridge which keeps us busy. We have done some dancing but nothing late and the rocking of the boat rocks us to sleep. I get up at 5:30 a.m. to get my place in line outside the gym door which is kept locked until 7a.m By that time the line of people outnumners the 8 treadmills so it is necessary. I am always first in line and people joke with me but they also understand at seas days we are busy most of the day teaching or running a tournament. One older man said he was 80....he is there every day on the tread mill for 1 mile takes him 17 minutes...he has been married for 60 some years (same lady) and said she was his best girlfriend :). He said when you find a good thing and you are a farmer you know enough to keep it! He asked what speed how long etc about my use of the treatmill and he said...."Way tooo much" Then he asked how old I was....when I told him, he said "Well, you are only a baby!" All of life is relative!
Sorry about length as well as I am sure there are typos and mis spellings but computer use can be challenging so decided to do it this way!
Love to all

Maybe interesting to those medical people or other travelers in the family

Gerry was required as crew to get a flu shot described as a Southern Hemisphere shot contracted to the one we get in the US. Funny though, since we share the same cabin; eat at the same table; etc.and I therefore come into contact with the same people he does , I was not asked to get the shot. Doesn't make much sense to me! But then I am catagorized as "guest" not passanger and not crew. I think there are very few of this type of passenger and they do not have a very organized situation for us.....as an example this morning customs people were on board and the ship had trouble locating my passport which is a somewhat uneasy feeling. I do have a photo copy as always feel that is a safe back up plan.

Another point of interest: at each port all passengers and crew disembarking are required to go through a screening which involved an instrument placed in the top fold of the ear. I believe it reads body temperature but am not sure. All those administering the test wear masks, gloves etc. The mask are really complete head covering hair neck and mouth, only eyes free. They sort of look like people about to enter a bee hive area.

Most of the Port terminal building also do screening using computers that register body heat on their screens as you walk by. Also many passengers grumble about it all or want to take photos which are not allowed.

We arrive at the Port...Sun Princess is in and unloading passangers. Excited!

Hold on......excitement turned to frustration and then rather concerning fear as several situations presented and hours passed..

Gerry,s name appeared on no crew list
We had a letter representing us as usual but no tickets or clearence except that letter
(This is as it has always been)
Port authorities desk will not clear either of us.
We are standing with 4 large suitcases and 2 carry ons
Princess personnel are no where....we do realize they are upstairs but Port authorities do not find either of us on any list and will not clear us to go upstairs.
I go outside to where regular travelers are processing their luggage and find a helpful person....who is not Princess and not Port Authority but a dock porter.
This person finds me on a list of passengers as Patricia McKinney not Bare no passport info no birthdate or country.
Another dead end.

So you all know I can be persistent LOL
But age has taught me honey gets more then vinegar!

3 1/2 hours later some one from Princess comes and insists she take Gerry (they have found him but still no info on me)and leave me and that she is in charge of CREW and I am not that. So Gerry goes up those magic stairs.

Another hour and I am getting a little panicy. I have still 4 bags ..large...$10.00 in my pocket no cell phone and no phone numbers and I am cold and Gerry has not reappeared and the Port people are friendly but I am not getting clearance and the head of the Port is a woman who is saying she is a single mom of 3 and that she can not break the rules as she might loose her job. I am joking with her asking if the ship sails without me could I be her free( for a roof over my head )children's nanny til the ship returns.

Another hour....I am running out of people to joke with

Finally a young man both Gerry and I had talked with earlier came up and said why are you still here? He said this is really rediculous ...say nothing and follow me. He ushured me through baggage drop off and we ran up the moving stairs to the land above the Port authorities and into Princess land. At that point he said....Here you can be warm, there are bathrooms and go to the Princess table and try to convinve them of this mixed up mess.

Story is long...bottom line....I got Princess's attention....finally ushured into Customs where they didn't like my blank passport (it is new) Get through that...and an now headed to board...time for ship Photogerapher. I am still able to smile and get my picture taken ALONE. BUT....I can see the entrance to the gangplank....wrong word....ship entrance. I board and think where will I find Gerry.???????...still have no room or dinning info but at this point I am just thankful to be on the ship:)

Gerry was very concerned had been trying to get someone to help get me on board and trying to think up a plan once announcement was made..."Ready for Sailing" to leave the ship and get reconnected to me.

I went to main desk and Gerry had been talking with them so they knew how to find him. As you all know Gerry has been pretty important to me....I have never been more relieved to see him and I think he me.

This ship sailed full and we are in the bowels of crew cabins in a room with bunk beds and I continue to say....It is fun climbing into a bunk bed at night.....right..... I spoke up for the top....I am quite thankful to be on board.

Adventures come in all shapes and sizes and challenges and rewards.

We have a 10 am beginners class which I am taking a really active opart in and an intermediate class at 11 AM that Gerry teaches as well as play from 2 -4. Keeps us busy!

Formal night last night....and this early in the cruise they had the chanpaign fountain and I was the first person in line to pour the champaign with the Chaptain. They now have it early pm rather than midnight so waiting to see photos.

All is well that ends well!

Love to all

      1. Perth, Australia was really nice. They have a beautiful Bell Tower, A huge Farris Wheel (like in London) as well as a beautiful Park called Kings Park. Jeff - the park reminded me of the one in St Louis....several sculptures in wather pool with rather elaborate fountains. It overlooks the Indian Ocean.

We took a day trip to the Pinnacles in the dessert which resembles a moon landscape. It was some distance outside of Perth. The Pinnacles are large limestone rocks and how they were formed is sort of complex but impressive and cover a rather large area near the sea. We saw white sand dunes as well as amazing fields of exotic flowers which are harvested and dried for shipment all over the world. On this trip we have a cold lobster and crayfish lunch which was delicious and very pretty.

2. The next day we went on a Ferry to an Island called Rottnest. It was small but had a wonderful relaxing feeling. Brian ...wish we had known to stay there but the amounft of luggage would have made that some of a challenge. This Island is famous for a small rat like animal called a Quokka. They are nocternal and are protected under the wildlife conservation at of 1950. Because of there protected status between 8000 and 12000 live on the island. The original Aboriginal people named it. It looks very similar to a Wallaby. Needless to say I have plenty of photos of the little creatures.

3.next on to the Port located in Fremantel and $50.00 cab ride away

After leaving at 7 pm for LAX finally arrived some 30 hours later is Perth. We both walked out of the sir port looking like plane chairs LOL only no so funny. We went through customs in Brisbane and Marine Travel had only allowed 2 hours between flights. Our 4 bags were the last to come out and customs had the dogs sniffing etc. Made the connecter only because it had mechanical problems. Good to make the flight but hoped the mechanical problems were fixed.

Hotel is nice with a view of the Indian Ocean. Today drove 3 hours to see Pinicales...very interesting and also saw herds of kangaroos which we have never seen in previous trips. Also visited a flower place that ships all over the world dried flowers.

Had great prawn and lobster...for lunch...picnic style...cold but great.

Post cards coming to Claire Riley Anna and Ella.

Love to all

I came here last Thursday and stayed with Heather and Kris til Sunday evening. We drove the trails in a 4 wheeler, went to the gym ( by the way it is way neat and Kris has signed up more members than his goal for this time), as well as Heather and I went shopping and one night we ate out after they sampled wine at their friend's wine shop. Kris has become a fantastic cook and on Sunday he cooked dinner for both families.

Starting Sunday p.m., I moved to Lisa's as she was on call for all of this week. It is now Sunday again and she will be done with call on Monday. Watching what a Doctor's "on call hours" are, is amazing! Adam got sick and has been running a 103 temp so has been in bed several days. Challenging to keep Anna and Ella away from him:)

The girls and I have walked every day for an adventure and have several trails we walk/ run on with the 2 seater stroller. Anna worries we will not find our way home ( there could be some truth there LOL) but Ella just sits there grinning. At times Isac follows along but then something distracts him and off he goes runniung so fast it appears his paws never really touch the ground.

We have found flowers, nuts, bird nests, bones, escaped lambs and assorted other nature items. Creative projects are being produced: stained glass mobels (really made from Elmers glue colored), playdooh art work that is now baking in the oven during their nap time, an Anna made an Easter decorated gingerbread house we put together ( beautiful but I would not want to eat it), And when all else fails the girls get to take another bubble bath. I am hoping their skin does not stay all withered as they will both look like an old person. They are so funny making breads out of the bubbles.

In the evenings, they go to bed around 7 so I turn my attentions to my MAC and just MAYBE I am making progress. Will know soon as I am coping my last trip and then will trash iphoto's current library. At one time I had 48,000 jpg on now it is bogged down with a little over 10,000. Think my camera uses more memory than my Olympic. I am behind in getting Tahiti on but this time the ship was so cheap they put on DVD's and printed for really cheap and then we got the employee discount as well.... YEA!

For all you runners...Kris is wanting to develop a 5 K trail. This part of Va seems to have really nice weather....mild winters....spring and fall pretty and not too humid in the summer. The only bad item is wasps or horrnits. They are very bothersome! Always a pleasure to visit. Unfortunately Gerry is working almost every day so he is in Ca Once back we have several activities....saw Rain recently and Dirty Dancing is coming also some bridge cruises before 09 is over and ofcourse Adam and Rachel's wedding. Look forward to seeing everone!

catching up with sort of one liners:)

1. Reading a very interesting novel....CHANGE OF HEART by Jodi Picoult
2. We saw Grease at the Pantages with Taylor Hicks who is now older but played in the original production as Teen Angel. Then in 2006 was the winner of the 5th season of American Idol.
3.Our HP computer purchased in 08 has spent more time at Best Buy under warrenty but continually full of viruses and acting possessed is back home again. Best Buy says Outlook is the problem and so they installed Mozilla Firefox. I am not a believer yet but hopeful!
4.We have Vista....does anyone know how to disable Windows mail as it pops up on its own!
5. Steven your fish tank is really neat and those 2 fish are delightfully active. I miss having a tank. very diverse movies.
6...Gerry and I have enjoyed the elephant seas as well as that stretch of PCH. Neat movies Brian.....not sure if the bat is cute! Riley and Jeff....love the robatic toy.
7.Heather...enjoyed especially seeing the elephant pot .....turned out great....wasn't that the kid who sat in the room seperate?
8. All Swap-O Rama participants.....what a really neat idea. Liked your fashion Claire:)
9. New exhibit at the Villa combining art and sience about restoration of vases. Way kool check their site if interested. Exhibit is entitled III...no pun food for thought
10. Good reputation for GE. After 4 home serviuce calls on our wall oven, they delivered a new unit
11. Steven's oral surgeon for wisdom teeth extraction was amazing....only took him 10 minutes to pull out all 4 wisdom teeth.
12. We are taking a Bible course discussion group on Wed am. Very interesting as leader brings so much history to it
13. Still volunteering at Getty
14. Active in Lamplighters at Church a group that tries to connect people at church socially but also involved dinner like for St Pat's evening as well as Turning Points a place we cook at for people being retrained after being down on their luck.
14 Craig...so glad you went to check out mole and we will be thinking about you and Grace. Will be thinking positive thoughts. Love you much! Thanks again for the computer help. So often people want to put that sort of think off which is counter productive. Be sure to remember me to Logan

SOOOOOO....enough one liners Best wishes to all

Bags are backed and will be heading home. Reminds me of the Jon Denver song

Problems with computer so think for 3 weeks will be off the tree. Best Buy says the mother board needs to be replaced. Thank heavens I bought a warrenty. This computer has been the pits and my apple is still chashing its tail even after illiminating 1/2 of the jpegs in the library...created space but it is still confused.

Have been enjoys at least resonding...now even my camers cards are fills and they won't load on Mac..

Lisa's kids have been great and have enjoyed visits to Kris's gym and both Lisa and Heather have interesting warm homes.

I will go directly to the Getty tomorrow after flight as I am one of the Getty Volunteers beig honored at their yearly recognitin evening. It's beautiful starts at 7 and the Getty is all lit up

      1. Today I finally saw a bird....1 flying bird! I I felt like Noah's wife except the bird did not have a stem in it's beak for sighting of land.

2. Our room has a port hole along with a large cover with large screws as in a water tight door on a sub. Today the ship is in very storny seas and rocking as well as rather rough waves. I left the room and upon coming back the port hole cover was shut and the room was pitch black. My feeling was one of disappointment as I had hoped as the ship rocked and the water covered the port hole I would see fish!

3.The food is excellent and I have gone to the gym with dedication. However, I feel I am loosing the calorie in vs calorie burned. Frustrating! And this is including running the nine flights of stairs as well.

4. There is a scale here. My feeling is it weights in 30 pound sways so one has no idea what weight yoou are. Gerry logically says "Take the average" very scarie!

5. When running the steps always on the 8th floor the ship is making a strange creeking noise. My feeling...is it should stop that as it is unnerving.

Just a few adventures
Happy New Year to All!
Love
