The strange boy who craves carrots
My biggest fall harvest this year was carrots.
I love carrots. I crave carrots. I adore carrots. They make me see very well.
We should have thinned them earlier in the year - we let these grow too close to each other. But, we were afraid to kill anything that was growing this year.
We made a recipe with these carrots, some butter, and some special brown sugar that Dad got from a cooking class.
The sugar is Billington's dark brown molassas sugar, and it is made using molasses for a very "dark" flavor. We were looking at where it came from on Google satellite map*, and found it was a very small island off of Madigascar called Mauritius. Pretty amazing that we ate something from so far away, mixed with something just from our garden. It was delicious.
A link to this sugar company (which claims to follow fair-trade practices) is here.

*PS - do other McKinneyTree web users have access to GoogleEarth? I keep trying to get it at home, because I love it at school. Dad thinks we may not have access to it, but we'd like to use it to explore the planet from our computer if we can.

Your photos are way neat! And those carrots look pretty neat too. It was quite a crop although different that you expected. Also the way of cooking in that sauce sounded really good. Gerry fixes good carrots but that recipie sounds very good.
Did you try sweet snap peas. We tried then year after year but I think Iowa was too hot so they burned out every year. Think they might be my favorite.
Do you have problems with rabbits liking your garden and eating stuff?
It is interesting to try different tastes from around the world. That is one of the reasons Gerry and I like to travel. After visiting many different cultures, I realize their food and beliefs can be quite different but people are people and what they care about most...familty..remains the same.
Wow, that's a lot of carrots! My favorite is still dipping a tasty carrot in peanut butter. I wonder if there is anything you can do with the green part of the carrot?
I haven't used google earth in a while (but will give it a try when I'm at my home mac again) but you should be able to get it running if you download/install the software it requires - found here:

I must say i hate carrots, especially the cheesy mom made variety
Madagascar .. this is on Shannon/I's short list of vacation spots in the next 5 years. If we go we'll try to bring you back some sugar
So I will try to remember you hated my carrots and never serve them!
