Pinewood Derby Design

I am building a car. A small car, but a car. It's my Pinewood Derby car for scouts. To figure out how to make it to travel quickly, we looked at the Boy's LIfe . com. It had good hints, like cooking the wood in an oven at 200 degrees for 2 hours to remove the moisture from the wood.

I draw the profile of my car onto a piece of paper, which I cut out and then traced the shape onto the wood block. I tried to make the shape by imagining I was the wind, to make it more aerodynamic.

Here is the original block of wood.

I took this wedge out first to give it a nose.

Here is the other side.

I cut the slope off the top.

Here I am smoothing out the nose.

Here I am cutting the curve of the top. It was very tricky.

I am now sanding it a lot. This is early, with a soup can wrapped in 40 grade sand paper (very course)

After early sanding you can see the shape emerging.

More steps to follow.

Dude .. this looks so fun!! I remember when I was in boy scouts making a car just like this. Here's a tip: Drill holes in the bottom and insert BBs to add more weight to the car, this should help it gather speed. disclaimer: my car did not win :-(

Have fun with it!

This makes me what to go buy a kit and make another car - it was tons of fun when I was in boy scouts.

PS - don't add BB's to your car, it's cheating (or at least it was) and they usually pick up on it.
