Notes from Smiley Riley

Pinewood Derby 2

You saw my rough cut Pine Wood Derby Car in my last post. Here are the fininishing steps I took.

After sanding to a smooth finish, I painted with a high gloss Yellow, in very thin coats.

I think you can see how smooth it is now. I want it to really cut through the air.

I cut blue masking tape to protect some of the yellow.

After a black gloss coat, and removal of the tape, I get this.

Like Brian suggested, I added weight. I used lead shot that I got at the local gun and ammo shop (they had some ready to give to cub scouts). I also smoothed more with some oil.

Here is an edge view, and what I hope happens with the wind, in color.

We tried to get a picture, like for a car ad, with some background.

I hope it looks like this on race day, but it has been fun to make no matter how it races.

Race Day to come!

Great job, Riley! Your car looks like something Batman would drive around.
